TRANSFERRING

Transferring from the Caribbean is something that is chased by many US FMGs for various reasons every year and the process can be very stressful and confusing. The process is difficult enough without the first hurdle that so many students experience, and that is the search for information. Where can I apply? Do I need research? How important are my MCAT and USMLE scores? Does it really matter that much?

I went through all of this myself and understand how you (assuming I know why you’re reading this) feel. I applied for transfer in the Spring of 2007 to several schools and was happy to accept a place with the Drexel University College of Medicine class of 2009. During this process, I tried to record as much as I could and this resource comes from that effort.

If there is something that I do not cover here that you would like me to address, please feel free to contact me via email or in the comments section of any of these pages. I promise you that I read every single comment. Please do not ask me any questions that I have already addressed in this section; I took the time to write this for you and I ask only that you take the time to read it.

Best of luck as you apply for transfer, topher.

What happens if you don’t transfer? More specifically, after completing years 3 and 4 of clinical training with Hospitals/Schools affiliated with your Caribbean school and taking the USMLE Step 2? I haven’t found a credible website (yet) that clearly delineates the next steps. I will speak with SGU and others to pose this question but until then is the next step taking the ECFMG? Are Caribbean schools considered a Fifth Pathway? In other words, before you can be “matched” or secure a residency in the US (if you are a US citizen…more specifically born and raised) must you complete additional tests/certifications/training on top of the 4 years and USMLE’s? Is that why you transferred?

Thanks for all the info Topher. I am currently a Term 1 at SGU. I am obviously researching transferring, but was curious as to when to begin calling schools and talking to SGU professors? Your timeline goes by months but not which term you were in.

Do I finish up the year top of my class then begin calling for M3 matriculation in the states or do I start applying now?

Was there ever any “fear” that your off-shore school would be bitter about your transfer? I imagine that all who interview at a transfer school aren’t accepted and their off-shore school faculty/dean may not have friendly feelings. What then?

I know this wasn’t your situation, but I thought I’d ask if you knew anyone who ended up on that boat.

I know it is getting harder to transfer to a U.S school due to the merger and the ratio of seats available in the U.S med school to the number of residencies available. However, do you still think there is still a chance to transfer with a good G.P.A and Step 1 scores. How important are MCAT score for FMG transfer student? I also notice that some of the links do not work on this page. Why? I love your website. Thank you!
